Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is an aggressively underrated little gem, one of those great, live-action, Disney family comedies which have basically vanished in the face of the new millennium.
These movies weren’t always horrible travesties like Tooth Fairy, for a time Disney seemed to put almost as much effort into them as they did their animated films. Now both have fallen into disrepair. If nothing else Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is proof that the world deserved a lot more Rick Moranis than it got. Which is why it’s such a horrible idea to remake it.
But remake it we must, because remakes and retreads are really all we have anymore. A site called What Is Playing claims that’s exactly what’s happening. They get their information one of the crew members who worked on the 1989 original. 1989? It’s hard to believe it’s been that long.
Their source, who could be anything from a disgruntled caterer to a director with an axe to grind, claims it’s definitely not a sequel because “Mr. Moranis has retired.” That’s true, Rick is pretty disinterested in Hollywood these days. He hasn’t showed up in a movie since the mid-90s, though he does provide a voice in Disney’s ignored 2003 animated movie Brother Bear. If you’ve heard him interviewed recently, you’ve heard a guy who so doesn’t care about the entertainment industry. Honey, I Shrunk The Kids reboot? Forget it, they’ll have a hard time even getting him to show up for Ghostbusters 3.

It’s not likely that the Smart-Gilas national basketball squad will play in Australia with a naturalization candidate. That’s the word from team manager Frankie Lim who said the other day he’s still negotiating to sign up either Dwayne Jones or Brian Butch as Gilas’ “import.”
“I’m still trying to get hold of Jones’ agent,” said Lim. “Butch is our second option. He’s a four-guy who has a good touch from medium range.”
Gilas is set to leave March 12 to play at least five games against Australian selections in Sydney and Canberra. Then, the team will depart for Serbia on March 28 to play seven games.
Jones has played for Boston, Cleveland and Charlotte in the NBA. He teamed with current NBA guards Jameer Nelson and Delonte West to power St. Joseph’s University to a 30-2 record in 2004 and was the first player from Norman Black’s alma mater to register a triple double in nearly 20 years.
Butch, nicknamed the “Polar Bear,” is averaging 17.5 points, 10.6 rebounds and 33 minutes for the Bakersfield Jam in the NBA Developmental League this season. He was the MVP of the recent D-League All-Star Game, compiling 18 points and 13 rebounds in 21 minutes.
SBP executive director Noli Eala said Jones and Butch are coach Rajko Toroman’s personal picks.
As for Fil-Am guard Chris Lutz, Eala mentioned that the Marshall University deadshot will skip the Australia and Serbia tours to play out his varsity eligibility in the NCAA. “He is committed to join Gilas right after the playoffs,” continued Eala. “He will definitely play for Gilas during the coming US and Canada tours.”
Eala also said Bernie Atienza, Butch Antonio, Rico Meneses and Joey Bautista continue to be involved in Gilas’ affairs.
“They weren’t actually completely relieved of their duties with the national team,” explained Eala. “Bernie, as SBP deputy executive director, is chairman of the national team management group. Butch is coach Rajko’s choice as special assistant and handles all national teams so he clearly remains an integral part of Gilas.
Rico is chairman of the SBP marketing committee and still secures sponsorships for Gilas including, recently, deals with Unilab as official team sponsor, Omega Pain Killer as official liniment and GMA Pinoy TV as broadcast partner of the Mideast tour.
Joey is head of the SBP media group and handles digital information dissemination and documentation for Gilas. They’re all still very much involved with Gilas’ marketing, media and coordination with international federations. The only real change is for these guys to help Gilas outside of Smart’s payroll.
It’s part of what I agreed with SBP vice chairman Ricky Vargas as budget management. These Gilas volunteers are responsible for the chemistry, camaraderie and animo of the team. The players will attest to their contributions.”

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is eyeing another prospect in NBA’s developmental league veteran Brian Butch for naturalization in case talks with NBA journeyman Dwane Jones bogs down.
Smart Gilas manager Frankie Lim yesterday said they’re now in the process of pursuing the 6-11 Jones, who suited up for several teams in both the NBA and the NBDL before ending up with the Austin Toros this year.
Lim disclosed that they had been having a difficult time getting in touch with Jones’ agent since the former St. John standout is still playing with the Toros in the NDL, which is expected to conclude at the end of the month.
“We’re having a hard time getting in touch with him (Jones) and we’re using all avenues to get him because he’s what coach Rajko (Toroman) wants,” said Lim. “Although we will not give up on him (Jones), we know Brian Butch could be a great fit to the team if in case we couldn’t get Jones,” he added.
Lim said Jones, an un-drafted rookie in 2005 who signed up with the Minnesota Timberwolves the same year before he was shipped to the Boston Celtics then moved to the Cleveland Cavaliers and finally to the Charlotte Bobcats two years ago, is expected to fill the Nationals’ need for inside presence.
Butch, a white 6-11 player who plays the No. 3 spot, doesn’t have the same power and athleticism of Jones but is more versatile since he does not only defend and rebound but also a reliable scorer who can hit it from behind the arc.

Less than a year after the launch of the EOS Rebel T1i (500D) comes the latest in Canon's hugely popular consumer SLR range, the Rebel T2i (EOS 550D).

With the 450D and 500D Canon appeared to be pulling away slightly from the real 'entry level' (a sector driven almost entirely by price), and the EOS 550D - on paper at least - is no exception, outgunning many of the 'upper entry level' and mid range SLRs on the market today in terms of spec. To ensure it doesn't lose out at the price-sensitive DSLR entry point Canon is once again introducing its new flagship Rebel as a 'sister' product to the camera it ostensibly replaces. The EOS 500D (Rebel T1i) will be staying in the range for the rest of 2010 (at, one presumes, a more attractive price point). We would assume that the new model finally spells the end of the line for the current 'bargain' Canon, the venerable Rebel XSi (EOS 450D).
In many respects the EOS 550D is a 'baby EOS 7D'. As well as getting a resolution boost to a class-leading 18 megapixels and a significantly upgraded movie mode (which now offers full HD capture at up to 30 fps, has full manual control and the option to use an external stereo microphone), the EOS 550D gets the 7D's sophisticated new metering system (bringing it a lot closer to similarly positioned Nikon SLRs). It also sports a new widescreen (3:2) LCD panel, has improved button design and finally offers the ability to customize the Auto ISO function.
It's clear Canon has been feeling the heat from the aggressive competition it faces from the numerous feature-laden cameras offered by Nikon, Pentax, Sony and Olympus in this market sector, and has decided to throw down the gauntlet with the most highly-specced Rebel we've ever seen. We'll reserve judgment on whether it's destined to be a class-leader until we've got a final production sample in for review, and I'm sure there's plenty of you interested to see how well it does too. As it stands we've managed to get hold of a pre production sample for a day in order to produce this brief hands-on preview to tide you over.
