2011 SEA Games: Sinag Pilipinas demolishes Cambodia, 127-68

Sinag Pilipinas opened its gold medal campaign in the Southeast Asian Games basketball tournament with a 127-68 demolition of Cambodia Monday afternoon in Indonesia.

Seven Filipino players scored in double figures, led by Kiefer Ravena who had 17 points on 8-of-8 shooting.

RR Garcia (16 points), Garvo Lanete, (15 points) Nico Salva, (14 points) Dave Marcelo (12 points), Chris Ellis (12 points) and Bobby Ray Parks (10 points) also had double-digit outputs.

Sinag Pilipinas pulled away from Cambodia early in the first period, when they unleashed a 12-0 run to turn a 13-all deadlock to a 25-13 lead.

Cambodia could not recover from that run, and the Philippines posted leads of as much as 59 points and ran away with the victory.

Most of the Filipinos' points came from inside the paint, where they made 74 points. They outworked the Cambodians on the boards, 44-24, and shared the ball better, tallying 26 assists to only 8 from Cambodia.

Although the team had only trained together for less than a month, they showed chemistry in their running game, translating Cambodia's 19 turnovers into 21 points.

They also tallied 12 fast-break points, with Ravena, Parks and Garcia doing much of their damage in transition.

Ravena, the UAAP Season 74 Rookie of the Year, punctuated Sinag's win with a breakaway dunk in the middle of the 3rd period, which was part of an 7-0 run that pushed the Philippines' lead to 32, 78-46.

Sinag Pilipinas is hoping to duplicate the feat achieved by the Gabe Norwood-led Philippine team in the 2007 SEA Games, which romped its way to the gold medal.

Filipino superstar and pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao retained his WBO title via majority decision over Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez here tonight as the epic trilogy ended up in an undecisive fashion as many of the rounds were close enough to be scored at either fighter. PRE-FIGHT: Great tribute to the late great Joe Frazier before the fight. Now the singing of the National Anthems as both fighters wamr up in their locker rooms. Wow. HBO reveals that Marquez weighs more than Pacquiao tonight, coming in at 150 while Pacquiao tips the unofficial scales at 148. Juan Manuel Marquez enters the ring accompanied by a mariachi band. A smiling Manny Pacquiao again walks to the ring to Survivor's Eye of the Tiger, with the band's singer.

Round 1: This fight is underway. It's a raucous atmosphere in Las Vegas with the fans supporting Marquez, and Pacquiao lands an early left hand to Marquez's nose that causes the fans to ooh and ah. A good flurry of punches they both connect with and and then more from Pacquiao.

Round 2: After a fast-paced first round both men are a little slower early in the second, perhaps trying to avoid making the first mistake in the fight. Marquez is trying to go to Pacquiao's body, but Pacquiao doesn't seem to be feeling anything. Pacquiao is moving quickly and punching crisply. Now Marquez lands a body shot and an uppercut. Pacquiao connects with a right hook. It's a close second round.

Round 3: Marquez lands a short uppercut. Pacquiao's movement seems to be frustrating Marquez, but Pacquiao isn't landing a lot of punches -- he's more active with his footwork than he is with his hands. A hard right hook from Pacquiao connects to Marquez's temple.

Round 4: acquiao lands a good left hook and then backs away and makes Marquez miss. Pacquiao comes in wildly and gets off balance but Marquez can't take advantage. Marquez lands two to the body effectively. Pacquiao lands a left and Marquez lands a right, and it's another close round.

Round 5: Marquez is continuing to go to the body, but Pacquiao is mostly blocking those punches. Now Marquez lands a big right to Pacquiao's head, and that one has Pacquiao reeling. Marquez with a good left hand now. Marquez is starting to get through and hurting Pacquiao. By far the best round of the fight for Marquez.

Round 6: Pacquiao charges inside, Marquez makes him pay with a right hand counter, but then Pacquiao comes right back with a hard left of his own. A great exchange. Pacquiao lands a right hook and Marquez with a left hook.

Round 7: Marquez lands a very big right hand that backs Pacquiao up. Now another hard shot from Marquez. Pacquiao appears to have some blood around his mouth. Now Pacquiao knocks Marquez back with a shot to the head. Marquez lands a left and then Pacquiao swings and misses.

Round 8: Marquez is countering very effectively and lands a good right cross. A good right hand to the head from Marquez. Pacquiao may be a little frustrated right now because he hasn't been tested the way Marquez is testing him in a long time.

Round 9: Marquez throws a 1-2 that Pacquiao blocks, then Marquez lands one to the back of Pacquiao's head. Marquez lands a couple of good combinations. Now they're back-and-forth brawling with Marquez appearing to get the better of some exchanges, only to have Pacquiao swarm and knock Marquez off balance. Pacquiao explodes in the final seconds of the round and that may have been enough to give the round for Pacquiao.

Round 10: Both guys came out of their corners looking a little bit worn out after that incredible flurry to end the ninth round. A couple of furious exchanges now which have Pacquiao backing up and gesturing that Marquez hit him with a head butt. Pacquiao has a cut over his right eye that he seems to think came from a head butt, but the referee hasn't ruled on that. Pacquiao appears to be frustrated and Marquez has been the aggressor in this round.

Round 11: The Nevada State Athletic Commission has confirmed between rounds that Pacquiao's cut came from an accidental clash of heads. Pacquiao lands a big left to Marquez's head. Marquez looked hurt by that one. They exchange hard rights, then Marquez lands a left as well. I think Pacquiao has connected on a few more punches than Marquez has in this crucial round.

Round 12: Marquez's corner is telling him that he's winning the fight, and Freddie Roach seems to think Marquez is winning, too, because he told Pacquiao he needs to knock Marquez down in this round. I'm not so sure. Good left hand from Pacquiao. Marquez seems to be playing it safe, which is no surprise considering that his corner told him he's winning. Pacquiao's mouthpiece falls out of his mouth which causes a brief respite. Marquez has a big overhand right. Pacquiao goes to the body. Pacquiao with a big left. The fight ends with them toe to toe.

Organizers of the December 3 football friendly match between the LA Galaxy and the Philippine national football team have revealed that the least costly tickets will be priced at P2,000 while the priciest seats will go for P15,500 each.

The LA Galaxy is currently the top-rated team in Major League Soccer, the US professional league, and will be playing for the league championship against the Houston Dynamo on November 20.

The Galaxy's star player, British midfielder David Beckham, is having what may be his best season in his five years of playing in America after a stellar career in England's Premier League.

The LA Galaxy may be the most illustrious overseas professional team to play in the Philippines in years, reflecting the strides football has made in capturing the fancy of the Filipino sporting public.

P14,000 for kids football clinic with Galaxy

The Galaxy-Azkals tickets will go on sale via Ticketworld Thursday afternoon. The other ticket prices are P5,000, P9,500, P10,500, and P12,500. The announcement was made via Twitter and the Azkaleros official fan page on Facebook.

Detailed information on seat locations and their matching ticket prices will be available on the Ticketworld website also on Thursday.

Tickets will also be sold for the 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. open practice of the LA Galaxy on December 2. Prices for this are more affordable at P3,000 for the grandstand seats and P1,500 for the bleachers.

Slots for the football clinic with the LA Galaxy in the afternoon of December 2 will be limited to the first 150 kids who can afford the P14,000 inclusive of the jersey, shorts and soccer bag.

Tickets for previous international friendly matches of the Azkals at the Rizal Stadium ranged from P200 for the side bleachers to P3,000 for the lower grandstand seats.

Shock, disbelief over Ali Peek shooting

News of Ali Peek’s shooting Monday night reverberated quickly around sports circles and was met with shock and disbelief by those who knew him.

“Unbelievable,” exclaimed Asi Taulava, the veteran center who often had Peek as his man everytime their teams collided.

Taulava wondered how this could happen to Peek. “He’s the coolest guy on the planet,” said Taulava, who two years ago was sent to Powerade (formerly Coca-Cola) by TNT in a trade that got Peek as a TNT player.

His friends also wanted to know how this could happen to Peek who has no known enemies and is one of the most admired and loved Fil-Americans in the PBA.

Peek, 36, was shot in the nape as he got ready to board his car following a workout at the RFM gym in Mandaluyong.

The TNT player remained in stable condition and out of danger but may likely miss the whole PBA Philippine Cup because of the injury.

The shooting caught many by surprise because Peek is known as one of the good guys in the league, “a peace maker” as he sometimes is known because he would be the first to stop players from exchanging blows or from getting into each other’s faces.

Police are still trying to determine the motive.

Being single, police are looking at the “love” angle although none of his friends said he is committed to any girl at the moment.

Robbery has been ruled out because the assailant did not get anything from him and went away quickly after putting one bullet on Peek.

The suspect was probably was aiming at the head but hit Peek’s nape instead as the player, at 6-4, was probably much taller than the gunman.

The suspect reportedly was seen inside the RFM gym moving around and looking a bit agitated. He also asked the gym operator how much it would cost to use the facilities, trying to appear as though he was a fitness enthusiast.

A police sketch of the suspect has also been released.

TNT team owner Manny Pangilinan has put up a P500,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the gunman.

“I can’t imagine what happened to Ali. Who will do that to him?” said Barako Bull’s Willie Miller.

PBA Commissioner, Angelico “Chito” Salud called for an investigation.

“There should be an investigation on what’s behind the incident. We’ll ask the assistance of law enforcers. The assailant should be arrested immediately and brought to justice,” said Salud who was glad that Peek is on his way to recovery.

Eight-division champion Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao promises to have "less compassion" for Mexican rival Juan Manuel Marquez when the two fighters meet in the ring on November 12 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, had urged him to regain his killer instinct and not be a "nice guy" come fight time, especially since Pacquiao has shown his last two opponents - Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley - some mercy.

"This time I have less compassion for my opponent," Pacquiao said in an interview with the New York Daily News. "Yeah, this is kind of personal."

Pacquiao and Marquez' first meeting ended in a draw, despite Pacquiao knocking down Marquez three times in the first round. The Filipino champion won their 2008 rematch via split decision.

Pacquiao has repeatedly said that he wants to end all the questions and doubts with the third fight.

Marquez believes he won both fights, even wearing a shirt with the words "Marquez beat Pacquiao twice!"

Roach said that the T-shirt was "a slap in the face."

"Manny will never say it but he doesn't like this guy. I can tell. He has a little sparkle in his eye," Roach said.

The Philippine Azkals outclass Nepal, 4-0, in their friendly match at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on Tuesday.

Phil Younghusband scored 2 goals for the Philippine squad, while his brother, James Younghusband, and Matthew Hartmann struck the 2 other goals.

Phil's first goal, which came off a pass by Paul Mulders, pulled the hosts ahead, 1-0.

In the 29th minute, James rifled in a long-range strike that nutmegged a Nepalese defender and evaded the outstretched arms of the opposing goalkeeper.

It resulted in the Azkals enjoying a 2-0 advantage, but the goalfest didn't end there.

Phil struck his second goal in the 54th minute that sent the Filipino crowd in a cheering frenzy.

The Nepalese squad almost pulled one back in the 61st minute but Filipino-British goal keeper Neil Etheridge was keen on a clean sheet.

Phil nearly pulled off a hat trick with his attempts in the 65th and 67th minute.

He later delivered an assist for Hartmann, who scored the Azkals’ 4th goal in the 88th minute.

The Azkals displayed brilliant ball handling, enjoying majority of the possession against Nepal.

It was a fitting rebound for the Filipino squad, which recently lost to Singapore, 0-2.

The Azkals hope that their performance against Nepal will raise their FIFA world ranking.

Nepal is ranked 135th in the world, while the Philippines is placed 166th.

Earlier, the Fujian Team of China walloped Qatar, 105-40, to finish third in the four-nation, four-day tournament.

The Nationals dictated the tempo of the game against the Thais, composed mostly of National Team B players, before intensifying their assault in the second half as Analyn Almazan and Chovi Borja joined the fray that the PH team build a 48-33 lead going into the final quarter.

The Thais, however, refused to give up the fight as Pattrawadee Janthabut, Benjawan Nisaimun and Pornchanok Leepairet joined forced to cut the Philippines’ lead down to 50-45 with 5:13 left.

But Joan Grajales and Aurora Adriano suddenly waxed hot, combining for three triples that finally flattened the Thais.

Adriano and Almazan chipped in 10 points apiece for the Filipinas, while Naisum topscored for Bangkok Bank with 13 markers.

The Filipinas also beat Qatar, 69-40, Bangkok Bank, 60-49, and Fujian Team, 63-47.

WUHAN – Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan vowed that his dream of seeing the Philippine basketball team back playing with the world’s best in the Olympics will live on.

The business tycoon hinted he’ll be even more determined to pursue this aspiration with the progress and improvement shown by the national team in the just-concluded FIBA Asia Championship here.

“Whatever it takes. Whether it’s 2012, 2016, 2020 or pag patay na ako (even when I’m dead),” Pangilinan told the Filipino sportswriters at the close of the Wuhan competition last night.

Pangilinan said he promised the same to FIBA president Yvan Mainini and secretary general Patrick Bauhmann in a brief talk moments after Smart Gilas lost the battle for third place to South Korea.

“They were complimentary and encouraging. They told me we 'made some progress, big progress, just keep on doing what you’re doing.' I told them 'we will not lose our dream of one day entering the Olympics,'” said Pangilinan.

“No matter what the people expect, I’m determined to see our support of the program. I’m determined to see one day the Philippines entering the Olympics,” the very supportive Phl cage federation chief added.

He had mixed feelings on Smart Gilas’ fourth-place finish in the 16-nation meet that served as the regional eliminator for the 2012 London Olympics.

“On one hand, (I’m happy) we improved from our Tokushima (ninth) and Tianjin (eighth) showings. It’s a good sign that our program is working. On the other hand, it’s sad we lost our shot at the finals and we lost the fight for third,” he said.

Five minutes away from wrapping up the bronze medal, the Nationals reeled from Cho Sungmin’s endgame explosion and settled for fourth with a heartbreaking 68-70 loss to the Koreans.

Smart Gilas was relegated to the bronze-medal play after yielding to Jordan, 61-75, in the semifinals.

Host China itself found Jordan a tough nut to crack, digging deep to win the championship match, 70-69.

The Philippines finished with six wins against three losses from the eliminations, same with Jordan.

Except for Marcus Douthit and Chris Tiu, all other members of Smart Gilas will join their PBA teams upon their return to Manila.

Pangilinan, however, reiterated the Smart Gilas program will continue.

Up in the air is who’ll run the program and who’ll be the players.

“We have to think about the core. I’m not a coach or a player, but I have insights now. We have certain weaknesses that I saw in this tournament that we have to focus on,” said Pangilinan.

He thought the national team would be better with tall guards.

“Our point guards are so small. I’m not saying that our point guards are not good; they’re very good especially Jimmy (Alapag). But I think we need bigger point guards for this team,” he said.

There’s no assurance as well to Rajko Toroman’s tenure as head coach.

“His (Toroman’s) plan is to go back to Serbia to rest and I said go ahead. We talk when you come back,” said Pangilinan.

“There’s no decision yet one way or the other. We have to look what’s good for the team in preparation for 2013,” Pangilinan added.

JAKARTA—The competition just got tougher for the Philippines as Season 3 of the AirAsia Asean Basketball League rolls off with a bigger eight-team field.

The Philippine Patriots, dethroned by the Chang Thailand Slammers last season, will go up against several new squads including another Philippine team in the San Miguel Beermen.

Aside from the Slammers, Thailand will field newcomer Bangkok Basketball Holdings while Vietnam will also join the action for the first time with the Saigon Sports Academy Basketball (SSA).

The league, which features top commercial cage teams in the region, will kick off on Jan. 14 next year.

“We’re getting stronger,” ABL chief executive officer Kuhan Foo said during the official launch Monday at Hotel Mulia here.

“We’ve stuck to the principle of pushing and promoting the league in the region as evidenced by the new teams. It shows that the league is growing.”

With the Philippines acknowledged as the region’s basketball powerhouse, the league has also drummed up interest in the rivalry between the Beermen and the Patriots.

“We hope to be as competitive as we’ve been in the 40-plus years we’ve been in basketball,” said San Miguel Corp. sports director Noli Eala. “The ABL is a terrific platform for our international brand and for our sports program.”

The Patriots, though, expect to put up a tougher fight this season with a revamped squad built around Far Eastern University standout Aldrech Ramos and Al Vergara, who’s finally suiting up for the country after seeing action with the Singapore Slingers.

Team owner Mikee Romero said his Patriots will still have coach Louie Alas.

“It’s a much better squad, we’re more formidable,” said Romero.

Bobby Parks will call the shots for the Beermen.

It was the memory of Busan all over again. Smart Gilas-Pilipinas collapsed in the endgame, allowing Korea to pull off a stunning come-from-behind 70-68 win Sunday night in the battle for the bronze of the 26th FIBA-Asia Championship For Men which came to a close at the Wuhan gymnasium in China.

Sungmin Cho proved to be the biggest thorn on the Nationals’ side as he poured off 20 points including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. He scored 10 of his team’s final 13 points to shatter the remaining Olympic hopes of the country.

The champion of the meet earns an outright berth to the 2012 London Games, while the runner up and third placer vie for four wild card spots at stake in the FIBA-World Olympic qualifying tournament to be held July 2-8 next year just weeks before the Summer Games.

“It’s a difficult time for me, it’s difficult time for the Philippine national team. Everybody was shocked, the players were crying, it’s a tough time for them," said Rajko Toroman, the Smart Gilas Serbian coach, trying himself to hold back tears during the post-game press conference.

Korea also dealt the Philippines a heartbreaking loss in the semifinals of the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea behind the dagger of a three-pointer nailed by Korean gunner Lee Sang Min at the buzzer.

This one is just as painful.

The Nationals were actually less than two minutes away from clinching the bronze, clinging on to a 65-61 lead following a strong drive to the basket by Marcus Douthit, whose monster game of 27 points and 22 rebounds showed the way for the team.

And then disaster struck.

Cho hit a three-pointer and naturalized player Taejong Moon, 0-for-5 from beyond the arc at that point, drained another one, as Korea finally took a 67-65 lead in the final 47 seconds after trailing by as many as 11 starting the final period.

The Nationals had several opportunities to regain back the lead, but folded up in the most critical time, missing five of their eight attempts from the foul line in the last 38 seconds.

The last of those botched free throws came with nine seconds to go on a split by Marcio Lassiter that made it 68-69.

Cho made just one of two free throws at the other end for the final margin, as JV Casio’s desperate attempt from three-point range came up short at the buzzer, setting off a wild celebration among Korean players and their coach Hur Jae at midcourt.

Jimmy Alapag was 6-of-12 from the field and 5-of-7 from three-point range for 17 points, while Kelly Williams added nine and 11 rebounds, but missed two foul shots with 26 seconds left in the game

The fourth place finish was the best the Philippines ever had in the tournament the last 24 years, duplicating the same feat achieved by the 1987 team of coach Joe Lipa and star player Alvin Patrimonio in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Koreans, who played without injured starter Donggeun Yang and the imposing Seung Jin Ha, had more points off turnovers, 13-5, points off the paint, 34-28, and second chance points, 15-8.
But their erratic shooting in the first three quarters paved the way for the Nationals to dominate the game three-fourths of the way, leading by as many as 24-11 and 41-29, before collapsing in the homestretch when the Koreans finally found their rhythm going.

WUHAN, China—Jordan shut down Smart Gilas Pilipinas’ direct path to London, crushing the Olympic dreams of a basketball-crazed nation.

The Jordanians came in tactically prepared and denied the Philippine five a historical trip to the gold-medal finale of the 26th Fiba Asia Championship with a 75-61 victory Saturday at the Wuhan Gymnasium here.

Spreading out a defensive blanket for 40 minutes, Jordan closed out on Smart Gilas’ shooters and ganged up on Marcus Douthit in the paint without letup to earn a spot in the finals, where the top prize is an automatic booking to the London Olympics next year.

Marcio Lassiter missed all of his 10 shots and combined for 0 of 21 from the field with Jimmy Alapag and Chris Tiu to typify the Nationals’ atrocious shooting percentage of 31 percent (22 of 70), a far cry from the 50-percent field-goal rating they had coming into the match.

The Jordanians challenged every shot, ready to dash crosscourt just to extend a hand on every long-range sniper on the floor and forced Smart Gilas to a horrific three of 23 from three-point range.

Douthit finished with 21 points and plucked down 15 rebounds but visibly struggled to earn his keep with the lanes clogged with wide-bodied Jordanian defenders.

“We never found our rhythm the entire game. Worse, they had 17 offensive rebounds and that changed [the game] a lot,” said Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman.

“Everything that happened was the opposite of our expectations,” added Toroman.

After 24 years, the Philippines is back to the medal round of the FIBA-Asia Championship For Men.

Marcus Douthit had a monster game of 37 points and 10 rebounds as Smart Gilas-Pilipinas whipped Chinese Taipei, 95-78, Friday night at the Wuhan gymnasium in China.

Douthit and Ranidel De Ocampo, who had his best game so far with 18 points, teamed up in a huge third quarter breakaway by Gilas after a slow start.

The Nationals will now face Jordan on Saturday in their first semifinals stint in the FIBA-Asia since 1987 in Bangkok, when a team bannered by Alvin Patrimonio and Benjie Paras and coached by Joe Lipa, finished fourth.

"It's a great win for us to remember," said Gilas' Serbian coach Rajko Toroman, who's also responsible for Iran's title run during the 2007 staging of the tournament in Tokushima, Japan.

"This is history for the Philippines, the best result in the last 24 years, so I have to congratulate my players."

Jordan earlier pulled off a stunner with a huge 88-84 upset of Hamed Haddadi and two-time champion Iran.

Although the Nationals had beaten the Jordanians in the second round, Toroman sees an even match up with them. "But the chances of going to the Finals now is much better with Iran out."

In the other knockout match, Korea trounced Japan, 86-67, and made it back to the semis after being eliminated in the quarterfinals two years ago in Tianjin. The Koreans will now face the winner of the China-Lebanon game.

Casio had two three-pointers during that run, including the one that shattered a 42-42 deadlock with 27 seconds left in the second period.

Gilas, until coming through with that scoring binge, was outhustled and outworked on both ends by the Taiwanese, who held a 16-8 edge in second chance points at the break.

As the Nationals struggled, the Taiwanese, who had former San Antonio Spurs coach Bob Hill as their consultant, rolled on and held their biggest lead at 39-31 on a Wen Ting Tseng three-pointer with three minutes and 59 seconds to go before the half.

Toroman promptly called a time out and Gilas responded with that scoring exchange.

Gilas' lead ballooned to 79-60, before Chinese Taipei threatened in the final three minutes behind a barrage of three-pointers to cut the deficit to seven (85-78).

WUHAN, China — One of the reasons why Smart-Gilas Pilipinas is playing so well in the FIBA-Asia Championship is because of the presence of naturalized center Marcus Douthit.

The 6-foot-11Douthit, without a doubt, is the heart and soul of the national team.

Smart-Gilas reached the knockout quarterfinal round of the Asian championship with a 5-1 record, including a clean sweep of the second round following impressive wins against Jordan (72-64), Japan (83-76) and Syria (75-52).

The Philippines is playing Taiwan at presstime.

Douthit has averaged 18.6 points and 10.5 rebounds in the tournament serving as the qualifier for next year’s London Games.

His best game so far was against Japan when he poured in 25 points and grabbed 18 rebounds.

“We understand that Philippines, without good big guy will never do something on FIBA-Asia,” said Smart-Gilas Serbian mentor Rajko Toroman. “Because we’re small, that’s the reason why we got him. He’s a big impact to our team.”

Douthit, a native of Syracuse (New York) who was picked by the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2004 Rookie Draft of the NBA but played professional basketball in Russia, was recruited by Toroman back in 2010 as the fourth import of Smart-Gilas.

Impressed by Douthit’s performance, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas quickly worked for his naturalization papers, which was approved only last May. He missed representing the country in the Asian Games last year in Guangzhou (China).

Toroman has only fine words for Douthit’s performance, saying: “He is very skilled offensively. He is very clever and very creative for his size and he’s doing a great job.”

In the last two staging of the FIBA-Asia, the national team has relied on local talent, the likes of Fil-Ams Asi Taulava, Erick Menk and Sonny Thoss, who went to battle against the much taller heftier opponents that includes Jordan.

In 2007 in Tokushima, Japan during the Olympic qualifier for Beijing Games, Jordan eliminated the SMC-Team Pilipinas in the preliminary round, and was the tormentor of the 2009 Powerade-Team Pilipinas as it dealt the Nationals a setback in their quarterfinal game.

WUHAN – Going up against a team it has dominated in the past and whose game uncannily resembles that of Japan’s, Smart Gilas Pilipinas goes for a seat in the Final Four against Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals of the 26th FIBA Asia Championship here.

And coach Rajko Toroman feels optimistic the Nationals can get past the Taiwanese if their decisive win over the Japanese in the elims would be a gauge.

“Chinese Taipei is like Japan, having good shooters in its lineup. We’re able to stop Japan’s shooters and I think we can do the same against Chinese Taipei,” said Toroman.

The two teams meet in a quarterfinals match at 6 tonight with the Nationals brimming with confidence against a team they have beaten in all four meetings in the last two years.

The Nationals are hopeful they can keep their mastery of the Taiwanese and get a shot at the finals versus the winner of the Iran-Jordan setto.

It’s China versus Lebanon and Korea against Japan in the other quarterfinal matches.

“If they can shoot the ball very well, then we’ll have a problem. But we’ve been playing good defense, and that’s the reason why I’m optimistic,” Toroman added.

The Serbian mentor believes he has able defenders against Chinese Taipei’s deadly wingmen and that the Taiwanese may not have an answer for Marcus Douthit.

“Marcus is making a big impact for our team. He’s very skilled, very clever and very creative for his size,” said Toroman of Douthit, among the best-performing centers in the tourney.

The Nationals beat the Taiwanese twice by an average margin of 11 points in the recent Jones Cup even minus Talk n Text stars Jimmy Alapag, Kelly Williams and Ranidel de Ocampo.

“We’re 4-0 against them but this is the one that counts the most. They can be dangerous and we have to be ready,” said Toroman.

The Taiwanese, still featuring the core of the team that placed fifth in Tokushima in 2007 and sixth in Tianjin in 2009, have made a good account of themselves here with victories over Qatar, Uzbekistan, Malaysia and Lebanon against loses to Iran and Korea.

They have as biggest threat shooting guard-forward Lin Chih-Chieh, a scoring machine in the Taiwanese league recruited to play with the Zhejiang Lions in the Chinese Basketball Association reportedly with a monthly pay of $15,000 (P645,000).

Providing them muscle and energy at the paint is another CBA regular in Tseng Wen-Ting.

That they beat Lebanon is a clear indication that they can’t be taken for granted.

Chinese Taipei is 11 notches ranked higher than the Philippines in the FIBA world ranking. It is also a traditional contender in FIBA Asia, having second-place finishes in 1960 and 1963 and third in 1973 and 1989.

The Taiwanese were in full force on the gallery, dissecting Smart Gilas’ every move in its game versus Syria Wednesday night.

And the fact that they were able to beat the Japanese convincingly makes Toroman very optimistic the Nationals can get past the Taiwanese and make the medal plays of the 26th FIBA Asia Championship here.

WUHAN – Finally making the national team after missing the cut in Tokushima and in Tianjin, Ranidel de Ocampo is playing it to the hilt on and off the court and acting like a senior member of the team.

De Ocampo has been to the Asian juniors championship and the Southeast Asian Games, and he feels great honor also being with the region’s best and finest in the men’s championship.

“I want to thank coach Rajko (Toroman) for trusting me, for letting me play here for the Philippine team. I’m also thankful to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, and what I can promise to give in return is my best in each of our games here,” said De Ocampo, sharing his experience with the international media.

“This is his first time in FIBA Asia, and he’s grateful to everybody he’s given the chance to represent his country,” said Toroman.

De Ocampo, one of four Smart Gilas reinforcements from the PBA, has been of big help to the national team here, averaging 6.5 points and 4.0 rebounds.

The former St. Francis of Assisi player has started in three games, making personal highs of 13 points against Bahrain and seven rebounds against Syria.

Kelly Williams, another PBA star alternating with De Ocampo at power forward spot, averages 5.5 points and 4.0 rebounds.

As among the seniors in the team, De Ocampo also watches his teammates back.

Apparently in retaliation to Takuya Kawamura’s hard foul sending Jayvee Casio sprawling to the floor, De Ocampo, moments later, hit the Japanese hotshot with an elbow to the face in their game Tuesday.

Kawamura couldn’t get his game going, scoring only 12.

It's do-or-die for Smart Gilas-Pilipinas when the quarterfinal stage of the 26th FIBA-Asia Championship For Men begins Friday at the Wuhan gymnasium in China.

The Nationals will be up against Chinese Taipei at 6 p.m., one of four knockout matches set for the day. Winners will advance to a similar do-or-die encounter in the semis on Saturday.

As the second-ranked team in Group F, the Nationals earned the right of facing the Taiwanese, who finished third in Group E. Chinese Taipei has not won over the Philippines in the last two years.

Gilas swept Chinese Taipei in the four games they played, including two in this year's Jones Cup basketball tournament where they won by an average of 11.0 points, the last of which an 82-72 decision in the battle for the bronze.

Despite the Nationals' winning record against the Taiwanese, coach Rajko Toroman believes Chinese Taipei remains a dangerous foe. "You'll never know what will be going on with Chinese Taipei."

Toroman said Chinese Taipei appeared to be a better team today compared to last month's Jones Cup, having finished third in Group E after the second round for a 3-2 (win-loss card).

Still, he remains wary of what the Taiwanese could do. "If their outside players started to shoot the ball well, we'll be in trouble," the Serbian coach said.

On top of Totoman's radar are star player Lin Chih-chieh and inside banger Wen-Ting Tseng, both of whom are playing in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).

The 29-year-old Lin, as a testament to his playing ability, just finished a two-year contract with CBA team Zheijang Lions, who signed him in 2009 for a monthly salary of $15,000 (roughly P630,000).

Toroman said he believes Gilas has the right tools to contain Chinese Taipei's streak-shooting forward just what like they did to prolific Japanese shooter Takuya Kawamura, who has limited to 12 points on a 3-of-11 clip in the Nationals' 83-76 win.

"This is the reason why I'm optimistic, although the most important thing now is still the quarterfinals," said the 52-year-old Toroman, who guided Iran to the 2008 Beijing Olympics after winning the FIBA-Asia championship a year before.

A win by Gilas meant surpassing the eighth place finish of the Philippine team during the 2009 staging of the tournament and marked the first time in a long while the country will be in the Final Four.

A win will also put Gilas and Toroman in a showdown against his former team Iran, if the two-time defending champions get past Jordan, in the next round.

The other knockout matches feature two-time defending champion and Group E top team Iran against Jordan, South Korea versus Japan, and Group F No. 1 squad and host China opposite Lebanon. — JVP, GMA News

WUHAN, China — The Smart-Gilas Pilipinas continued its steady improvement as it dealt Japan its first setback with a come-from-behind 83-76 victory to clinch an outright quarterfinal berth in the FIBA-Asia Championship Tuesday at the Wuhan Gymnasium here.

Playing aggressive inside the shaded lane, the Nationals relied anew on the 6-foot-11 center Marcus Douthit and the outside shooting of Marcio Lassiter and Jimmy Alapag in the payoff period to beat the Japanese.

In a fitting sequel to his brilliant game against Jordan the other day, Douthit collected 25 points aside from grabbing 18 rebounds, six of which on the offensive board. He also had three blocks to highlight his all-around game.

Lassiter, in his second game together with Chris Lutz after being banned in the first round, and Alapag added 15 points apiece while forward Kelly Williams had 12 points for the Nationals.

The win hiked the win-loss record of Smart-Gilas to 3-1, giving the team a sure spot in the next round of the tournament that serves as qualifier for the London Olympics next year.

More than that, the win put the Nationals in a better position in the quarterfinals where they will face either the Taiwanese or Lebanese.

Had they lost to the Japanese, they might be pitted against Iran or South Korea.

The national team, which scattered 52 points off the paint and controlled the rebounding department, 44-31, will try to remain perfect in the second round when it closes out its second round campaign with a game against Syria Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the same venue.

“We know it’s a very difficult game, Japan has great shooters,” said Smart-Gilas Serbian coach Rajko Toroman. “Our strategy is to give space for their shooters, and force their big players to shoot outside. We’re playing better and better in this tournament.”

WUHAN – Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan had to personally fight for Marcio Lassiter and Chris Lutz and urge FIBA Asia deputy secretary general Hagop Khajirian to let the two embattled Fil-Ams play against Jordan yesterday.

In a text to The STAR, Pangilinan said there was a last-minute drama that took place before the Phl-Jordan game as the Fiba official continued to bar Lassiter and Lutz from playing.

“Hagop did not allow our two players to play before the game. I had to call FIBA Geneva to intervene and I had to barge into his office to get him (Hagop) to let go,” said Pangilinan.

“Fiba HQ had a letter of authorization, which I had to remind him. Politics, that’s even here.”

“They can lodge their protest up to Mecca. We have a letter from (Patrick) Baumann specifically authorizing Lassiter and Lutz to play. Even Hagop has a copy,” he added.

“We are all happy, especially SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan, that Marcio Lassiter and Chris Lutz were able to play starting in the second round. The national team will play now at full strength,” said SBP executive director Sonny Barrios in a statement. [PHL vs. JORDAN REPLAY - VIDEO]

“We appreciate FIBA (officials) Baumann and Benjamin Cohen for their prompt decision, made and forwarded to us even on a Sunday at their end,” Barrios added.

Meanwhile, FIBA Asia secretary general Dato Yeoh Choo Hock scored the Qataris on how they conducted themselves after five of their players were ruled ineligible.

“Fiba Asia expresses its deepest regrets on these unforeseen and irresponsible acts of Team Qatar, which has caused a minor aberration on the shine of the championship,” said Yeoh.

“Such an errant and reckless attitude of the Qatar national team has no place in our sport,” Yeoh added.

The Qataris drew the ire of the Chinese basketball fans as they made a mockery of the game versus Uzbekistan and Iran, giving away fouls as early as they could. They only played serious game versus Chinese Taipei Sunday then opted to skip the classification round.

Yeoh issued apologies on behalf of Fiba Asia.

“Our heartfelt apologies to the CBA (Chinese Basketball Association) and the Wuhan LOC, where a lot of people have worked very hard for long hours to put this event together and to ensure its success,” he said.

The Nationals played without Marcio Lassiter and Chriz Lutz for the first seven minutes of the game, and then survived a huge, 18-point deficit early in the second quarter in pulling off what coach Rajko Toroman described as the biggest win in his coaching career.

“It was big win for us, maybe the biggest win in my life," admitted Toroman. “I’ve won for Iran, but this is something special. Under this kind of circumstances, only the tough players with the big heart can win this kind of game.

It seemed everything was stacked against the Nationals as the match was already marred by controversy even before the opening tip off.

Despite being given the green light by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) to play for Smart Gilas, Marcio Lassiter and Chris Lutz were still barred by FIBA-Asia officials from competing in their first Olympic qualifying meet, their names officially scratched off from the 12-man roster of the team just minutes before game time.

Only after an official communication from FIBA secretary-general Patrick Baumann to FIBA-Asia deputy secretary general Hagop Khajirian were both Fil-Ams finally given the clearance to suit up.

However, by the time the clearance was given, the Nationals were stuck in an 11-29 quagmire in the second quarter, built behind nine straight unanswered points by the Jordanians and punctuated by a Rasheim Wright medium range jumper.

But the tide turned once Smart Gilas was back in full force.

PBA playmaker Jimmy Alapag and Lassiter sparked the Nationals’ outside shooting with back-to-back three-pointers, while Marcus Douthit took care of the middle as the three spear-headed a game-changing third quarter run that saw the team get back the lead after a long chase, 47-41.

The game was tight from there on before the Nationals canned four straight free throws in the final 25 seconds to secure the all-important win.

“To beat Jordan under this circumstances is simply amazing. I think the players deserved all the credit," Toroman gushed.

“Tougher team mentally won the game," admitted Jordan coach Thomas Baldwin, who said he placed the game under protest at halftime when tournament officials allowed both Lutz and Lassiter to play.

Douthit proved his dominance inside with 19 points and 15 rebounds, Alapag had 11, and Lassiter with 14, including 4-of-10 from three-point range.

“Marcio is one of our best wing players. Without him, we’ll never win this game," said Toroman of the 23-year-old Fil-Am from Marshall University.

The Nationals improved to 2-1 overall, and will face unbeaten Japan at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Japanese hiked their record to 3-0 after routing United Arab Emirates, 101-61.

Osama Daghles scored 18 points and Rasheim Wright 16 to lead Jordan. Wright however, was 0-of-9 from three-point range, including his last attempt in the final 31 seconds of the game and Jordan trailing, 64-66. - OMG, GMA News

WUHAN, China — The second round of the FIBA-Asia Championship starts Monday with Smart Gilas Pilipinas hoping to reaffirm its mastery over Jordan as it presses its comeback bid to the Olympic stage.

Though Gilas lost to Jordan in the Jones Cup last July, the boys of Serbian coach Rajko Toroman still enjoy a 6-3 advantage over the Jordanians in their personal duel the past two years, including a friendly duel a week before the start of the event.

More than that, Toroman knows Jordan’s game plan like the palm of his hand.

“We have a lot of games with Jordan, last two years,” said Toroman as the national team plays Jordan at 3:30 p.m. “Mostly, we won the games. They beat us in the Jones Cup, but last game we won in Manila.”

The Nationals won their opening game here against the United Arab Emirates, 92-52, but lost to host China (60-75). Smart-Gilas closed out its preliminary round campaign with a 113-71 victory over lowly Bahrain last Saturday.

With a 2-1 card, the national team moved to the second stage of the Asian championship, the qualifier for the London Olympics next year, together with fellow Group D China (3-0) and UAE (1-2), and the top three teams from Group C, Japan (3-0), Jordan (2-1) and Syria (1-2).

The six teams are in Group F.

In Group E are the top three teams from Group A, South Korea (3-0), Lebanon (2-1) and Malaysia (1-2), and Group B, back-to-back FIBA-Asia champion Iran (3-0), Chinese Taipei (2-1) and Uzbekistan (1-2).

The records of the teams will be carried over in the second round of FIBA-Asia, although their won games against opponents that were eliminated after the preliminaries will no longer count and that teams will play countries from the previous groupings.

The Philippines is also scheduled to battle Japan on Tuesday and Syria on Wednesday.

The top four teams from Groups E and F will advance to the crossover knockout quarterfinals, which is set Friday.

Focus now is against Jordan, which beat Syria (71-58) and Indonesia (89-59), but lost to Japan (87-92).

For Chris Lutz and Marcio Lassiter, hope springs eternal. While time slowly runs out for Smart Gilas-Pilipinas, the two Fil-Ams are still confident they’ll be able to join the team as the second round of the 26th FIBA-Asia Championship For Men unwraps Monday in Wuhan, China.

“Obviously, it’s really upsetting," said Lutz, 26, and picked third overall by San Miguel in the last PBA Rookie Draft. “We put a lot of work on this team. And the basic reason why we’re brought in is to help the team, help to come here to this exact tournament and help out in any way possible."

Both got the shock of their lives when FIBA-Asia officials declared them ineligible to play an hour before the Nationals’ opening day game against United Arab Emirates.

A technicality in their Filipino citizenship documentation prevented them from suiting up for the team, although Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Manny V. Pangilinan already assured Lutz and Lassiter over dinner Saturday that the federation is doing everything it can to get the two of them to play.

The business tycoon said the matter had already been elevated to the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), which Pangilinan hopes would come out with a decision in time for the team’s game against Jordan Monday.

“I can’t wait to have my chance on the court," added Lassiter, who signed up with Powerade as the Draft’s no. 4 overall selection. “Frustrating? Yes, of course. We worked hard for this, we trained for a year. To have this, something thrown to your face, it hurts."

But like the true warriors that they are, both wingmen expressed readiness to suit up for Smart Gilas once finally given the go-signal to play.

“We’re just patiently waiting and see what happens," said Lassiter, out of Cal State Fullerton. “I have no control over it. I just hope things can get resolved so that we can play."

“It’s not really in our hands," acknowledged Lutz, a product of Marshall University. “We can’t do too much it. We’re hoping before the end of the tournament maybe things will change." - OMG, GMA News

MGM Grand, Las Vegas - Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26KOs) knocked out Victor Ortiz (29-3, 22KOs) in the fourth round to capture the WBC welterweight title.

The first minute of the fight was a clear indicator that Mayweather's speed was still there and he was landing accurate punches while making Ortiz miss his counters. In the second round, Mayweather stayed true to his promise and he did exchange with Ortiz in spurts. Ortiz would rush in and get Mayweather against the ropes while firing punches, but he missed most of his punches. Mayweather's counters were accurate and hitting the target almost every time. Mayweather was picking him off in the third round and blocking almost everything in return.

Mayweather started unloading at the start of the fourth round. Ortiz was able to fight him off. Ortiz pinned Mayweathr against the ropes and let his hands go, but most of the punches didn't land clean. Near the end of the fourth, Ortiz was landing on Mayweather against the ropes and appeared to hit him with an elbow.

Referee Joe Cortez stopped the action to take a point away from Ortiz. When Ortiz went to hug Mayweather to apologize, Mayweather blasted him with two hard shots as referee Joe Cortez appeared to be giving Ortiz some type of instructions. Ortiz went down and took the full count.

Ortiz is bouncing and lands a right hook but misses his left cross. They’re fighting at close quarters thus far and Ortiz takes advantage by landing two rights to the body. A jab lands for Mayweather and then an straight right. Ortiz also trying to get his jab going and is showing some pretty quick hands tonight. Ortiz lands a left and the round is over.

ROUND 2: Ortiz comes out and lands a left cross but Mayweather makes him miss the rights. A left lands for Ortiz now as Floyd lays on the ropes and dodges a combination. A right lands for a lunging Mayweather and Ortiz ties him up. Right hook to the body lands for Ortiz and he’s trying to stay in front of him. A left lands for Mayweather as he backs off and then a sharp right hand; then another one. Ortiz gets him into the corner and is trying to land right cross over the top. Ortiz gets in a left to the mid section for Ortiz and then another one that lands an tad low. Floyd misses a jab but has now landed two straight right hands; a third one is blocked by Ortiz.

ROUND 3: Ortiz comes out throwing three right jabs and is bouncing on his feet to try and get a rhythm. Ortiz throws a left but Mayweather counters him with a left hook that makes Ortiz back up. Ortiz now moving in circles and he eats a couple of jabs. Mayweather lets Ortiz paw at him with three jabs and then comes in with a lighting quick right hand that stops Ortiz in his tracks. The right hands are landing at will for Mayweather! Ortiz lands a left hand and then another lead left but Mayweather shakes his head as if to say “nah” and counters him with a right hand.A right uppercut lands for Mayweather after Ortiz had landed a nice left hand.

ROUND 4: It’s pretty obvious that Mayweather is still very sharp. He’s showing blazing hand speed, solid defense and in the opening minute of the 4th, unloads on Ortiz with a barrage of punches. Ortiz traps him in the corner and throws a left but Mayweather lands a check hook. Ortiz gets him along the ropes and lands two left hooks…Mayweather says no but Ortiz had a good moment. Ortiz again has Mayweather against the ropes and he throws a right cross but Mayweather escapes. Floyd lands a straight right hand and Ortiz is moving in circles again. Two left hooks are missed by Mayweather as Ortiz backs away but then takes a right hand down the middle. Ortiz lands with a left hook and a right, while Mayweather rips an uppercut. Ortiz suddenly has a point taken away for headbutting Mayweather. After a point is deducted from Ortiz, Mayweather looks to touch gloves and instead sneaks in a right hand that knocks Ortiz out!!

Smart Gilas-Pilipinas breezed past Bahrain, 113-71, to book a seat in the second round of the 26th FIBA-Asia Championship For Men Saturday at the Wuhan gymnasium in Wuhan, China.

Gilas jumped the gun on their opponents but didn't really put the Baihrainis away until they came through with a huge run opening the second half. Halftime ended at 51-40.

Big man Japeth Aguilar came off the bench and sparked a 20-0 Gilas run at the start of the third quarter to pull away for good. They enjoyed a 70-40 advantage midway in the third.

Aguilar scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds—all in the second half—to lead the way for the Nationals, who won two of their three games to finish as the No. 2 team in Group D.

"I just want to help the team and help it in anyway," said Aguilar, the former Western Kentucky University stalwart, who scored 14 points in Gilas’ third-quarter break away.

They now advance to the second round and will be joined by China, United Arab Emirates, Group C qualifiers Japan, Jordan and Syria in Group F.

"We used this game to give some confidence on our players," said coach Rajko Toroman. “We put in all of our players in some kind of warm up for the next round."

Marcus Douthit added 18 points and nine rebounds, JV Casio tallied 15 markers, Asi Taulava and Ranidel de Ocampo finished with 13 each while Mac Baracael and skipper Chris Tiu scored 11 and 10 apiece for the Nationals, who shot 37-of-55 from the field for a 67 percent clip.

Three more players fielded in by Toroman scored two points or more as Gilas await the fate of Filipino-American guards Chris Lutz and Marcio Lassiter, declared ineligible to play by tournament organizers owing to a technicality in their Filipino citizenship.

"If these two guys (Lutz and Lassiter) will join us in the next round, we will be competitive," said Toroman.

The tournament takes a break on Sunday before resuming with the 12-team second round on Monday. — JVP, GMA News

WUHAN, China—The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas has asked the Department of Foreign Affairs to provide a certification reaffirming the citizenship of Smart Gilas stalwarts Chris Lutz and Marcio Lassiter.

SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan met with Fiba Asia deputy secretary general Hagop Khajirian before the national team’s game against host China last night and lobbied hard for the reinstatement of both players.

Pangilinan said they’re just waiting for the DFA to send the reaffirmation, copies of which Fiba Asia will be furnished and the Fiba Central Board in Geneva, Switzerland.

“We’re waiting for the reply of the DFA, which I believe is positive,’’ said Pangilinan. “We’re grateful to the government for helping.’’

But for how long it will take for the DFA to send those documents, the telecommunications and utilities mogul doesn’t know.

“That one I don’t know. We will lobby hard. Once Fiba received these documents, I’ll ask Hagop for another meeting,’’ said Pangilinan.

“It’s only the first round. But in the second round, we definitely need them (Lutz and Lassiter).’’

Smart Gilas operations chief Butch Antonio earlier said Fiba legal affairs head Benjamin Cohen had suggested to let Lassiter and Lutz suit for the national team as naturalized players.

Fiba Asia allows only one naturalized player per country. Marcus Douthit already owns that spot with Smart Gilas.

Lassiter and Lutz, two solid pillars of the PH five’s bid to qualify for the London Olympics next year, were barred from playing during the team’s 92-52 whipping of United Arab Emirates in the Thursday night opener of the Asian championship at the Wuhan Gymnasium.

Citing Article 3-21 of the Fiba internal regulations, Khajirian said Lutz and Lassiter should present proof that they acquired Filipino citizenship before reaching the age of 16 lest they would be considered naturalized players under Fiba rules.

Khajirian showed a letter dated Aug. 30 calling the attention of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas on the eligibility of Lutz and Lassiter and instructing federation officials to resolve the matter prior to the tournament.

Smart Gilas operations chief Butch Antonio said SBP executive director Sonny Barrios and consultant Moying Martelino have been burning the lines with Fiba secretary general Patrick Baumann and Cohen in Geneva, Switzerland, to reverse the ruling.

Khajirian said both players have been issued Philippine passports after their 16th birthday, thereby making them naturalized players under Fiba rules.

Born and raised in the United States with Filipino mothers, Lutz and Lassiter are natural-born Filipinos under the 1987 Philippine Constitution.

“These two guys are Filipinos, they have Filipino blood. In the law of the Philippines, they are Philippine citizens. The rules are the same in the last 20 years,’’ said Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman.

“If somebody from Ivory Coast with Filipino blood came to the Philippines and wants to play, must he come to the country before turning 16?’’ added Toroman.

Lutz, who played for US NCAA Division I Marshall University, is 26 while Lassiter, a former University of California-Fullerton starter, is the youngest Smart Gilas at 23.

Khajirian claimed that Fiba regulations on naturalized players were being implemented for more than a decade now and yet Filipino-American players Kelly Williams and Gabe Norwood didn’t go through the same ordeal in the 2007 Asian championship held in Tokushima, Japan.

“That’s the regulation. Present any document which can prove that they acquired citizenship before 16 and they can play in the next game,” said Khajirian.

Five players from Qatar, two from Lebanon and one from Syria were also not spared by Fiba Asia’s eligibility crackdown.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Manny V. Pangilinan arrived in Wuhan, China Friday for an audience with FIBA-Asia officials in the aftermath of the ineligibility issue hounding the campaign of Smart Gilas-Pilipinas in the 26th FIBA-Asia Championship For Men.

Pangilinan is set to meet with Hagop Khajirian of Lebanon, the FIBA-Asia deputy secretary general, later in the day in the hopes of resolving the case of Nationals Chris Lutz and Marcio Lassiter, who were both declared ineligible to play in the team’s opening day game against United Arab Emirates.

A team insider said he expects the meeting to take place prior to the game between Smart Gilas and 14-time winner China (8 p.m. Friday), with the hopes that a positive response from FIBA-Asia would lead to both Lassiter and Lutz being allowed to play against the host country.

The two Fil-Ams were barred from suiting up with the team as Hagop stressed they haven’t received the necessary documents qualifying both players as Filipino citizens prior to their 16th birthday, a provision that he said, is clearly indicated under the FIBA-Asia regulations.

Despite the absence of the two, the Nationals handily beat UAE, 92-52, for their first win in the qualifying tournament for the 2012 London Olympics.

“I don’t know why FIBA was waiting the last few days to clarify that. We could have done something about it differently," said national team coach Rajko Toroman. “We can put Dylan (Ababou) and Larry Fonacier in the team. Moying Martelino, the Philippine Olympic Committee official designated to submit required documents for the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team participating in the ongoing FIBA Asia Championship,

said on Thursday that there is still a chance for wingmen Chris Lutz and Marcio Lassiter to see action in the Olympic qualifying tournament.

“They’re not disqualified to play,” said Martelino, who once served as secretary-general of FIBA Asia. “They’re only not allowed to play until after they’ve submitted documents to prove that they’re Filipino.”

On Wednesday, FIBA Asia deputy secretary-general Hagop Khajirian raised questions about the eligibility of the two Filipino-American players. Minutes before the Philippine team’s opening match against the United Arab Emirates the next day, SMART-Gilas were still unable to get clearance for the two stalwarts, forcing the squad to play with just ten men.

The contention over the eligibility of Lassiter and Lutz came as a surprise to the team and to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, the country’s national basketball federation.

Martelino said that there has been a misunderstanding on the part of FIBA Asia about the status of the two players.

“I think the confusion lies on the Article 321 of FIBA, which refers to players who were naturalized as in the case of Marcus Douthit,” said Martelino. “But Lassiter and Lutz are natural-born Filipinos and we will present this stand to FIBA Asia.”

“We will meet with Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Sonny Barrios [on Friday] and send to FIBA Asia our position,” he added. SMART-Gilas hopes to have the two players available when they face Asian powerhouse China in the second day of competition.

Philippines wallops UAE in FIBA Asia

Despite missing the services of Chris Lutz and Marcio Lassiter, Smart-Gilas Pilipinas trounced the United Arab Emirates (UAE), 92-52, on Day 1 of the FIBA-Asia Championship in Wuhan, China.

Mac Baracael led the Nationals with 15 points on 7-of-8 field goal shooting.

Naturalized citizen Marcus Douthit and Asi Taulava each scored 13 for Gilas, while JV Casio came off the bench to add 11.

UAE managed to stay within 5 points in the first quarter, 17-12.

But Taulava and Casio sparked a 24-10 exchange in the second quarter to break away from UAE, 41-22.

Gilas never looked back after that. The Nationals even led by as much as 41 points in the second half.

Hussain Ahmed finished with 12 points for UAE.

Ali Alhattawi and Ibrahim Ahmad were the other double-digit scorers for UAE.

Alhattawi made 11 while Ahmad tallied 10.

Gilas will next play host China on Friday.

Trouble for Lutz, Lassiter

Lutz and Lassiter won’t be able to suit up for the Nationals following a complaint lodged by Lebanon.

The 2 Filipino-Americans were ruled as “naturalized citizens.”

“(Their papers) clearly say that both players have been issued Philippine passport on the date after their 16th birthday,” FIBA Asia deputy secretary general Hagop Khajirian said in Philstar.com.

“They (may have become) Filipinos after the age of 16. We don't have a document proving that they acquired citizenship before the age of 16,” he added.

WUHAN, China – The waiting game ends where the real battle begins for Smart Gilas-Pilipinas.

The Nationals’ bold dream of ending the country’s four decades of Olympic drought sets into motion Thursday at the start of the 26th edition of the FIBA-Asia Championship For Men, the very tournament for which this high-profiled, well-funded Philippine team was primarily formed three years ago.

Bolstered by the presence of four professional players and an intimidating, 6-foot-10 naturalized center with a wide wingspan, the Nationals launch off their campaign against United Arab Emirates in one of eight games scheduled on a busy opening day in this capital city in the province of Hubei,

Smart Gilas tackles UAE at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Wuhan gymnasium.

Not since coach Ignacio`Ning’ Ramos and his 1972 team, bannered by the 70s hotshots, from the late Narciso Bernardo to the sweet-shooting Bogs Adornado, competed in the Munich Games, had there been a Philippine quintet play again in the Olympics.

A striking win at the expense of UAE would certainly set the pace for the Nationals, quarterfinalists during the last FIBA-Asia staging in Tianjin, China two years ago.

UAE however, is not regarded as a big threat to the championship. The bigger threats are Jordan, Qatar, Lebanon and two-time defending champion Iran.

Still Toroman, the Serbian mentor who knows international basketball like the palm of his hand, isn’t about to take their opponents for granted.

“I think we are a better team, but if you underestimate them, we’ll be in serious trouble," said Toroman, who arrived with his 14-man team here late Tuesday afternoon.

Smart Gilas already had a glimpse of how UAE plays, which the Nationals defeated handily, 95-60, during their encounter in last month’s Jones Cup basketball tournament in Taipei.

However, Toroman wouldn’t be swayed to believe that it's going to be a breeze for the Nationals notwithstanding that whopping 35-point victory last month.

“We beat them in Jones Cup, but we have to be very, very serious against UAE," he said of their opponent, which played coach Mike Krzyzewski and his Duke Blue Devils in a friendly game in Dubai in late August.

“I was watching the game against Duke. They’re not looking bad, they have athletic players and have wing position. UAE is not a bad team. They have some quality players and a new coach, a Bosnian guy (Brian Lester)," added Toroman, who steered Iran to its first ever FIBA-Asia championship in 2007 and a berth in the 2008 Beijing Games.

“It will be very difficult, but we have to win this game."

Only the champion at the end of the two-week long event, which China is hosting for the second straight edition, gets to earn a berth in the 2012 London Olympics. But Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman, 52, remains optimistic anything can happen once the Philippines – the second winningest team after China in the 51-year-history of the meet – makes it to the knockout stage of the tourney.

After UAE, the Nationals next face Yi Jianlian and mighty China, before rounding out their preliminary campaign against Bahrain in Group D.

The SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team starts its chase of the elusive Olympic berth when it battles United Arab Emirates Thursday at the start of the FIBA Asia Championship for Men in Wuhan, China.

The nationals and UAE collide at 6 p.m. in a Group D face off that is one of eight matches in the opener of the tournament that serves as qualifying for the 2012 London Games.

Though SMART-Gilas has beaten UAE in the past, head coach Rajko Toroman said they cannot take their opponents for granted as a loss would be damaging to their campaign.

“We’re a better team but if you underestimate them, we will be in trouble,” said Toroman, who is tasked to bring the Philippines back to the Olympics.

The Filipinos beat UAE by 35 points in the Williams R. Jones Cup in Taiwan last month but Toroman said it will be different story in FIBA Asia.

“They have now their best shooter, two good wingmen and big guys who can shoot from the perimeter. That’s the difference since we played against them in Taiwan,” he added.

The Philippine team will be bannered by naturalized player Marcus Douthit, who is eager to end the country’s Olympic drought that has lasted for almost four decades.

“We’ve been working hard for this for over two years and all the things that we’ve worked for is finally here,” he said.

Toroman has yet to name his final roster as the managers’ meeting was being held Wednesday night, as he has yet to decide between Dylan Ababou or Mac Baracael in the Final 12.

Jayvee Casio has been given the clearance to play after missing the team’s practices prior to their departure for Wuhan due to the swollen right knee he got in the Jones Cup.

After UAE, the Nationals face host China on Friday and Bahrain on Saturday. Bahrain is fielding in former La Salle player Bader Malabes in the tournament.

Reyes, a former national coach, also said that they are elevating the case to FIBA-World's governing body.

Lutz, whose mother Luzviminda is a Filipina while his father Wayne is an American, played for Marshall University.

For his part, Lassiter, who played for Cal State Fullerton, has a Filipina mother Alexandria Eshabarr, whose father traces his roots to Ilocos Sur.

Marcus Douthit, Greg Slaughter, Kiefer Ravena and Bobby Ray Parks are said to be shoo-ins for the Philippine basketball team that will compete in the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia this November.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Sonny Barrios said Tuesday that these players were included in the 12-man list that the federation submitted to the Philippine Olympic Committee for the deadline for the submission of entries by name.

Other players listed in the lineup were reigning UAAP MVP RR Garcia of FEU, San Sebastian’s Ronald Pascual, San Beda teammates Garvo Lanete and Jake Pascual, Ateneo’s Emman Monfort and Nico Salva and Fil-Ams Clifford Hodge and Chris Ellis.

But Barrios clarified that the selection of some players doesn’t mean they are already in the final roster for the biennial tournament.

“Baka akalain kasi ng iba na wala na silang pag-asa. So let me say na hindi pa ito `yung final lineup. There is a possibility na may madagdag at may mabawas. Nobody is casting anything in stone,” said Barrios.

The former PBA commissioner added other players like SMART-Gilas team members Chris Tiu and Aldrech Ramos, SSC’s Calvin Abueva, UST guard Jeric Fortuna and Kevin Alas of Letran could also make it to the final cut for the SEA Games event where the country is the defending champion in the men’s division.

“Kasi we have to meet the deadline set by the POC kaya we have to submit an initial lineup, which again I’m emphasizing is not yet final. I believed until the day of the managers’ meeting puwede pang magpalit ng lineup,” he added.

Ateneo head coach Norman Black will handle the Philippine five.

In the 2007 SEA Games, the Junel Baculi-mentored Philippine team, led by Gabe Norwood, Jason Castro, Jervy Cruz, Beau Belga and Jeff Chan, swept the opposition by a winning margin of 43 points to win the gold medal.

There was no basketball event in the 2009 SEA Games in Laos due to lack of a suitable playing venue.

Smart Gilas Pilipinas coach Rajko Toroman hinted he won’t hesitate to leave streak-shooting guard Jvee Casio out of the team’s final 12-man roster for the FIBA-Asia Championship For Men if his swollen right knee does not heal.

Toroman shared this scenario upon departing for Wuhan, China, site of the Sept. 15 to 25 tournament that offers a single Asian berth to next year’s London Olympics.

“We’ll see the situation with Jvee," said the Serbian coach of the team’s best outside shooter who suffered the injury during the Nationals’ stint in the Jones Cup basketball meet in Taipei last month.

“It’s a possibility (to scratch Casio) if we see him in practice (Tuesday), and again on the morning practice on the 14th (Wednesday). If he’ll say he won’t be ready, he won’t be ready. If he’ll say he’s ready, he’ll be in the line-up."

But Casio, the no. 1 overall pick in the recent PBA Rookie Draft, easily doused whatever issue surrounding his health.

“Ito talaga yung pinaghahandaan kaya kailangang maging ready," said the 25-year-old guard out of La Salle, who finally practiced with the team for the first time Monday during the Nationals’ last scrimmage at the Meralco gym.

“It’s better than the last two weeks. Strengthening na lang talaga, kailangang magpa-lakas," added the cerebral guard.

Toroman is also deciding who between Mac Baracael and Dylan Ababou will likely make the cut before the Nationals, who left Manila with a 14-man lineup, plunge into action on opening day Thursday opposite United Arab Emirates.

“We have some doubts on who to put, Mac or Dylan," admitted Toroman. “We changed the position of Baracael because we now have three power forwards (Williams, Ranidel and Japeth Aguilar). That’s just our doubts. We’ll discuss who will fit us more, Dylan or Mac."

Baracael used to play the power forward spot, but now had to slide down to take the wings following the arrival of Talk `N Text reinforcement Kelly Williams and Ranidel de Ocampo in tandem with Japeth Aguilar.

Ababou, the one-time UAAP Most Valuable Player (MVP), previously missed the 12-man cut of the team in last year’s Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, but had been playing well the past few games, including the two tune-up matches Smart Gilas played against visiting teams Qatar and Jordan.

Smart-Gilas Pilipinas mentor Rajko Toroman is faced with the difficult decision of who will be cut from the team as the Philippines begins its FIBA-Asia Championship campaign starting Thursday in Wuhan, China with the London Olympics berth at stake.

With 14 players currently in the roster, Toroman will reduce it to 12 which is the allowable number for the tournament.

“We haven’t decided who will be in the final lineup,” Toroman said prior to the team’s departure. “We’ll decide who will be cut Wednesday before the manager’s meeting.”

The PBA players, point guard Jimmy Alapag – Season 36 Most Valuable Player – and his Talk ’N Text teammates, forwards Kelly Williams and Ranidel de Ocampo, as well as Meralco center Asi Taulava are all expected to make the team of Toroman.

The same goes for 6-foot-10 naturalized center Marcus Douthit, who will be making his debut in the Asian level competition.

Question now is: Who will be cut among the remaining players?

Toroman will have to decide who from his core group of guards Chris Tiu, JV Casio and Mark Barroca, forwards Mac Baracael, Dylan Ababou, Marcio Lassiter, Chris Lutz and Japeth Aguilar, and center Jason Ballesteros will make the team.

During the Nationals’ final practice session last Monday at the Meralco gym in Ortigas, the 56-year-old Toroman gave a few hints.

“We’ll see the situation with JV,” Toroman said. “It’s a possibility (to scratch Casio) if we see him in practice (Tuesday), and again on 14th in the morning practice. If he’ll say he won’t be ready, he won’t be ready. If he’ll say he’s ready, he’ll be in the lineup.”

Because of a swollen left knee, Casio has missed the final three games of Smart-Gilas in last month’s William Jones Cup in Taipei. Since then, he wasn’t able to join the team practice. It was only last week that he was given the ‘‘green light’’ to play in scrimmages.

The 25-year-old Casio said he’s about 90 percent ready, adding that the knee is not actually the issue as he is just recovering his full strength, saying: “It’s better than the last two weeks. Strengthening na lang talaga, kailangang magpa-lakas.”

Smart Gilas Pilipinas leaves for Wuhan, China this morning, whipped up to fighting form by a three-year training program and firmed up by a naturalized player and four PBA reinforcements that should make them ready for their dream of making it to the 2012 London Olympics.

They depart at 6:30 a.m., hopeful of their chances in the 26th Fiba Asia Championship, the journey that decides their Olympic aspiration.

The Nationals, who have never made the Olympics in over three decades, open their campaign in the Wuhan meet against Bahrain Thursday.

"It will not be easy but we surely are sending the best SBP could put together under the circumstances," said SBP vice chairman Ricky Vargas.

"One thing I'm sure about is that our players will give it all they have for flag and country. We might spring a few surprises as underdogs against perennial favorites," Vargas added.

The coaching staff is convinced the team has a legitimate chance to win.

Head coach Rajko Toroman maintains the initial goal is to make the knockout stage then everything can happen from there.

The Serbian mentor, a one-time Fiba Asia winner, presided over the Nationals’ last practice at home at the Meralco gym yesterday.

"With Marcus Douthit plus the four pros (Kelly Williams, Ranidel de Ocampo, Jimmy Alapag and Asi Taulava), the good draw, the format, with no Yao Ming (for China) plus a little luck, we have a legit chance to win it all," said assistant coach Chot Reyes.

"Tactically and technically, coach Rajko is prepared. He has done a tremendous job bringing our country to respectable level," said Ryan Gregorio, who's also a deputy to Rajko for this Asian meet.

"Douthit's help will be critical on both ends because he has the size, length and intelligence to compete against the best centers in Asia. But the biggest contributions are coming from Ranidel and Kelly at position No. 4 and Jimmy at point guard," Gregorio also said.

The three coaches agreed the addition of Williams, De Ocampo and Alapag has made the team more upbeat.

The three also agreed, though, that the task is not easy.

They mentioned China, Korea and Japan from East Asia and Iran, Jordan, Lebanon and Qatar from Middle East as the other teams to beat.

But the Nationals should be ready to compete.

"This is what we prepared for when we embarked on this ambitious project three years ago. The dream of earning a ticket to London, though lofty, can be achieved," said Gregorio.
